Ten Myths about Training in the Martial Arts

Myth 1: “I have to get in shape before I join Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy.”

Joining a martial arts school is one of the best ways to get back into shape. Our classes not only teach you self-defense, but our training will work your cardiovascular system, build stamina and strength, and improve body tone and flexibility. Our class enrollments include new and experienced students.

Myth 2 : “I’m going to get beat up at a martial arts school.”
Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy emphasizes patience, compassion and kindness. Students receive an Academy Handbook containing student ethics and Dojo rules. Our instructors ensure that student safety comes first. No student is ever required to participate in our class sparring sessions.

Myth 3: “I’m too old to start training in a martial arts program.”
There is no age limit in martial arts. Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy has students ranging in ages from four to sixty years old. Training in the martial arts is a life-long activity. Tournaments such as the 2003 World Masters Judo Championships had competitors over the age of 80 years old.

Myth 4 : “I’m not flexible enough to do martial arts.”
Martial arts increases a student’s flexibility over time, but it is not part of the criteria for class participation. Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy training increases students’ elasticity and strengthens the mental aspects of the “mind over the body.”

Myth 5: “Martial arts are for men.”
At Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy fifty percent of our students are women—ages four on up. Women thrive in the martial arts because they use technique over strength and have an eye for detail. Women also train in martial arts for physical fitness and self-defense.

Myth 6: “I don’t have the time to train in a martial arts program.”
In today’s society we have such busy schedules—work, school, social functions, and daily chores that we think we don’t have time to train in the martial arts. Joining a martial arts program, such as Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy, will actually relieve the daily stress of a person’s busy life, plus it is a proactive step toward healthy living, which improves both mind and spirit.

Myth 7: “I’m not coordinated enough to practice martial arts.”
With time, students who practice martial arts develop coordination.
Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy’s progressive training methods help
students build muscle memory and develop coordination.

Myth 8: “I become a master when I pay for my black belt.”
At Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy students must earn their black belts. It takes a minimum of eight years to be recommended for Shodan (1st black belt). Shodan, in its literal translation means first grade. The rank of Shodan symbolizes the passage into a new level of training in a martial artist’s life.

Myth 9: “I have a disability that prevents me from training in the martial arts.”

Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy trains people with disabilities. Our instructors have experience working with physically challenged students. In the martial arts, a disability can become an attribute and an advantage over an opponent.

Myth 10: “I don’t have the financial means to pay for martial arts classes.”
Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy strives to keep affordable prices for all students. We offer family packages and college student rates. Our extensive class schedule in the various martial arts offers students the flexibility to attend as many classes for a reasonable price.
