Yesterday, I had the honor and privilege of being awarded Shodan (First Degree Blackbelt) in free form combat from Hayashi's Martial Arts Academy. The belt presentation was in front of Sifu Greg Allen and six yudansha.
Eight years ago, my son & I started at Hayashi's. Cris has a purple belt in Judo. There have been a great many positives in my life because of Hayashi's - I met Lisa at the dojo.
Thank you Sensei Taichi Hayashi for giving me the opportunity and the knowledge to get this far.
I was fortunate to be able to train for this with three martial artists whose skills are superior - Roberto Gutierrez, Josh Gray & Peter Scruggs. Not only are they excellent martial artists and teachers, but excellent human beings, with great families. All three received Shodan as well.
Congratulations to Jorge Talavera on receiving Sandan and to Mando & Chupa for their black belts.
It has been a privilege to have been trained by a number of talented people: Mari, Eric, Moe, Esther, Brenda, Serenity, Patrick, Sergio, Louis among others. I wish Jorge Diaz-Dulanto were here.
A very special thank you to Sensei Diane Crowell-Hayashi who started me on this journey.
When I graduated college we were told "your education is just beginning". Yesterday we were told "You just finished kindergarden, the learning starts now...".

Mike "The Storm" Chupa Brings Home Another Victory...
Mike dominated the ring Saturday night at the El Paso Convention Center. As soon as the bell rang, Chupa’s experience and power took over immediately. His opponent, Dimitrius Williams, lost his balance several times trying to connect several kicks. The fight quickly went to the ground with Chupa’s legs wrapped tightly around William’s waist keeping him at his guard. After a few minutes of ground and pound on the floor, the fighters got back on their feet. As each fighter paced in and out looking for an opening, Chupa shoots in and the fighters lock neck to neck. The crowd shouts to Chupa, “Knees, Chupa, Knees!” And sure enough, Chupa delivers three consecutive knees to the face, knocking out his opponent. William’s falls straight to the ground and Chupa finishes the fight with several strikes before the referee pulls Chupa off to declare the fight over. Chupa wins the fight in the first round with a TKO. Chupa’s victory has set the momentum for the Hayashi’s Fight Team due to fight on Sunday June 26th at Fort Bliss Centenial Ball Room for Finish the Fight MMA.
