Busting Martial Arts Top 10 Myths!

1. “I have to get in shape before I go to your school.”

Our training will get you in shape. After prolonged periods without exercise, joining a martial art is one of the best ways to get back in shape. Our classes combine new and veteran students with new students enrolling all the time, so we become a give and take community.

2. “I’m going to get my butt kicked there.”

Hayashi’s Dojo puts great emphasis on patience, compassion and kindness. Students receive an academy handbook containing student ethics and dojo rules. Our instructors ensure that student safety comes first and while we occasionally host light sparring sessions during class, no student is ever required to spar.

3. “I’m too old.”

As age has no relevance in the martial arts, there is no age limit. Hayashi's Dojo currently has members in ages ranging from 4 to 65. Additionally, martial arts are practiced around the world as life-long activities. In fact, the 2003 World Masters Judo Championships had competitors over the age of 80.

4. “I’m not flexible enough.”

While martial arts are guaranteed to increase flexibility, flexibility is not a necessary attribute in order for one to participate. Martial arts primarily seek to increase the elasticity and strength of the mind over the body.

5. “Martial arts are a guy’s thing.”

Nearly 50% of our classes are populated by females. Moreover, women commonly flourish in martial arts due to their attention to detail and technique, over gross strength.

6. “I don’t have the time.”

If you have time to watch TV, play video games, log on to the internet or spend hours on our website, then you have time to join our classes. People forget quickly: there is always time to take a proactive step toward improving our minds, bodies and spirits.

7. “I don’t have the coordination for it.”

Martial arts restore and reinforce coordination that has diminished over time due to inactivity and age. Just as all functions in our bodies, coordination is like a muscle that must be continuously trained.

8. “I’m a master when I pay for my black belt.”

A black belt must be earned. It takes a minimum of eight years to be nominated in order to receive Shodan (black-belt). Shodan, is literally translated: “first grade”. Earning Shodan symbolizes the passage into a new beginning in the life of a martial artist.

9. “I have a handicap.”

Hayashi’s Martial Arts Academy has been training citizens with disabilities since its inception. Our instructors have experience working with an array of physically challenged students. But most importantly, in the world of martial arts a disability is commonly viewed as an advantage because where one door closes many are forced to open, especially in the mind.

10.  “I don’t have the money.”

Hayashi’s Dojo strives to maintain family and student friendly, affordable prices. Aside from having unbeatable family deals, we also offer special prices for corporations who share the same passion we do. In addition we offer multiple classes and an extensive schedule so busy students are sure to get the most out of their experience.
